Susan Smith is a science educator at Central High School in Central, Iowa, entering into her 8th year of teaching this fall. She received her B.S. in Education from Drake University in 2006 and M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Concentration in Teaching Science from the American College of Education in 2008. With endorsements in chemistry, biology, general science, and coaching, Susan teaches AP and General Chemistry, biology, zoology, and forensic science. She has also served as the science department chair, assistant high school girls’ track coach and student council advisor in the past 7 years at Central. In 2012, Susan participated in a Real World Externship at John Deere in 2012. Over the past three years, she has partnered with John Deere and a smaller entrepreneurial startup engaging students in a weeklong “Careers in STEM” program. Two students have had the opportunity to job shadow and receive summer internships from this program.
