Fulfill the UI College of Education Community Service Requirement

The Opportunity

The Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship is offering several week-long volunteer opportunities for:

  • UI College of Education students
  • Students who participated in the College of Education First-Year Seminar, “So you want to be a teacher?”

Volunteers work a total of 40 hours in one week as a student instructor to 30+ students in an elementary or middle school entrepreneurship camp.  Volunteers are directly supervised by an Iowa certified teacher and have opportunities to practice their teaching skills. 

Volunteering for one week as a student instructor at entrepreneurship camp will fulfill the UI College of Education Community Service Experience requirement provided students have been admitted to the College of Education.

Select applicants will have the opportunity to work as a paid employee ($9.5/hour) at additional camp(s).  Select applicants would serve as a volunteer for one week and receive compensation for additional weeks worked.

Dates

The Jacobson Institute will offer camps the following weeks in the following locations:

  • Marion 5-8 Grade Camp, June 19 – 23, 2017
  • Des Moines 6-9 Grade Camp, July 10 – 14, 2017
  • Iowa City 5-6 Grade Camp, July 10 – 14, 2017
  • Iowa City 6-9 Grade Camp, July 17 – 21, 2017

Compensation

As per the Community Service Experience requirements, this volunteer opportunity is unpaid.

Student Instructor Responsibilities

To fulfill the Community Service Experience from the University of Iowa’s College of Education the Student Instructor must successfully complete the following objectives:

  • Use the camp practicum experience as an opportunity for student exploration and personal growth and development.
  • Attend a pre camp workshop (2 hours) prior to the camp commencing.
  • Meet the minimum number of student (camper) contact hours (camp is 38 hours per week)
  • Work directly with the lead teacher during all camp activities.
  • With the help of the lead instructor, develop a unit to be taught to the campers which will include but will not be limited to: a lesson plan, teaching tools, worksheet, related activity and assessment of the camper’s understanding of the concepts being taught.
  • Observe and model lead teacher’s classroom management strategies.
  • Assist in creating a learning, productive and positive environment for all campers in attendance.
  • Keep a daily log/journal of activities, observations, interactions, problems, outcomes and feelings in regards to the camp experience.
  • Hold brief conferences with the lead teacher a minimum of twice during each camp week.
  • Along with the Jacobson Institute, confirm successful completion of Community Service Experience necessary for College of Education.
  • Document the experience on the Teacher Leader Certificate ICON Tracker.
